Size reduction
Size reduction is the mechanical process of breakdown of solids into smaller size particles without altering the state of aggregation of solids
Principle
In size reduction particles of solids are cut or broken into smaller particles by compression, impact, attrition or rubbing and cutting.
- Compression is used for the course
reduction of hard solids to yield a few fines,
- Impact gives coarse, medium, or
fine products,
- Attrition gives very fine products
from soft, nonabrasive materials and
- Cutting produces a product of
definite particle size and sometimes a defined shape, with few or no fines
Application of size reduction
Size reduction
operation is carried out in
- Coal washeries
- Ore processing industries
- Chemical industries
- Paint industry
- Cement industry
- Food processing industry
